We Are All Jews Now

I just finished watching a another documentary on the fall of the Third Reich. Even though I have watched many similar documentaries on Germany and Europe during the 30’s and ‘40’s, the current situation in the U.S. told me that this one might be very timely, so I watched it (and it was). One segment in particular near the beginning of the film strongly resonated with me to the point of feeling as though I had received a kick in the gut.

The segment showed some private, rarely seen home movies of the horror surrounding Kristallnacht: the burning of synagogues, shattered windows in Jewish owned businesses and houses, Jews being arrested and beaten in the street. In many of these scenes you can see German civilians watching the fires, looking at the shattered windows and observing the beatings. Some of the Germans were smiling as Jews were being led away to their unknown fate. Some even raised their fists in celebration. Others just looked on sullenly and said nothing…
