During the four years preceding WWII from about 1935 to 1939, it was obvious to anyone who cared to pay attention that Adolph Hitler was rebuilding the German military in clear violation of the armistice agreement signed by Germany in 1918 at the end of WWI. Hitler started that massive rebuilding of the German Armed Forces (renamed Die Wehrmacht) in earnest in 1935 in anticipation of reclaiming much of the territory and prestige taken from Germany after its humiliating defeat in 1918. Even though this complex effort was conducted more or less in secret, the other military powers of the day were well aware of this development, but chose to do nothing, perhaps from the war fatigue still prevalent in Europe even 17 years after the end of WWI. Perhaps it was because naive and very gullible politicians chose to believe Herr Hitler when he promised time after time that he was only interested in peace and would never be the aggressor.
