A good friend of mine just announced they were in stage four of a fatal disease and had only five months to live. Their demise would come with the new year. This news struck me to my core. I have known this friend since I was a child and we were inseparable, especially during long drives or rainy days and snowstorms when we were stuck inside together for hours on end. To be sure, this was a very one-sided relationship, but I know my friend did not expect anything more from me than my respect and attention, both of which I gave without reservation. My life, indeed, my very soul would have been much poorer without my dear friend.
I am speaking, of course, about the impending end of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Late last week they announced that due to about $1.1 billion in federal funding cuts they will be forced to permanently suspend all operations in January. Here is an excerpt from ABC News:
